Ligaments are like strings that attach muscles to each other, muscles to bones, and hold the bones in place. It's these 'strings' that are holding you knee together. If you rip them or tear them completely, your lower leg will flop around freely from the knee down. This would be a soft tissue tear of the ligaments of the knee. Or it could be a tibula and fibula fracture. These are the two bones that make up the lower leg. If they both got broken just below the knee, it would provide a result similar to what you described. This would be called a simple fracture of the tibula and fibula.— — — — — —American Football Question from a Non-American: Good Sporstmanship Question?I say take the knee, if you do not , the other team will remember the next time. Warner was to serve as the senior federal representative to address the standoff at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Warner successfully resolved the issue without blood shed. Attorney Kenneth Tilsen, representing the American Indian Movement, commented that "Warner was the only one who really knew what he was doing...". Colonel Warner, in civilian clothes, arrived in the area on March 3 with orders to determine whether U.S. troops should be committed - a serious decision, since an executive order from the President would be required. Joseph Trimbach, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the regional FBI office in Minneapolis, who met him at Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Rapid City, assured him that this was a case for the U.S. Army: The FBI requested that two thousand soldiers seize the reservation and restore order, after which the FBI would move in and make arrests. Colonel Warner recommended that SAC Trimbach's request be refused, and also that the FBI change its standing orders from shoot-to-kill to shoot-to-wound, in light of the fact that the Indians were not trying to harm anyone. The symbolic presence of the U.S. Army, in the person of Colonel Warner, is credited with blocking the all-out attack that the FBI and its allies had in mind.— — — — — —Can you get knee cancer? The "knee" is not comprised of one tissue, therefore there is no such thing as "knee cancer". He still remained a prominent Native American leader until his death. Sometime between 1894-1896, he was reported to have been a sideshow attraction at a San Francisco Midwinter Fair Carnival. In 1917, an agent for the Nevada Agency named L.A. Dorrington tracked down Wovoka to report on his whereabouts to Washington. Curious to see if the former Native American messiah had any ties to the Native American Church, Dorrington found that Wovoka was instead living a humble life in Mason. He abstained from the practice, worked as an occasional medicine man, and traveled to events on reservations across the United States. Wovoka died in Yerington on September 20, 1932, and is interred in the Paiute Cemetery in the town of Schurz, Nevada.
Is It Okay to Use Dishwashing Detergent to Clean My Cats Food and Water Bowl?
Yes it is fine, I even put my animal dishes in the dish washer. The heat from rinse kills germs and they are plenty clean.1. My cat keeps tipping over his water bowl? Some cats do not like the chlorine in tap water, try rain water, a bit excessive I know, but it may work2. Why is my bearded dragon in the water bowl so much? HELP!?he is wishing he were dead3. my yorkie wont eat ou the food bowl, but will drink out of the water bowl, he likes his food spread on floor?Buy the dog their own special little plate. Its much better than eating germs off a walked on floor,YUCK!4. Why does my cat *pick up* her water bowl and tip it onto its side?Buy a bowl that she can not tip over. My cat use to do this. I leave two bowls around the house of water and I would come home and there would be water everywhere!!!! He use to play in the water then tip it over. He finally grew out of it!5. I left a cat water bowl out without changing the water now have little black things swimming in it?Clean it up immediately. Clean it thoroughly, too. Then, I would let your cat inside and give him fresh water6. Should my pet rat have a water bowl, or a bottle on the side of it's cage?Water bottles. Rats pee and poop in the bowls and they get dirty quicker. Use bottles7. Why did my cat start tipping her water bowl?my cat does it also, i use a heavy bowl that wont tip over but she still splashes some out, i put food and water bowl on an old tray to keep some of the mess off the floor8. why do cats carry their water bowl in their mouth?Maybe they are thirsty9. Cat keeps dumping out her water bowl?Get a weighted water dish that's impossible to tip. She may be doing this to annoy you ;)10. What should I do to stop my cat from tipping over her water bowl?Superglue the bowl to the floor?11. How often do ball pythons soke in their water bowl? It's actually a good thing that your ball is not soaking in the water. They usually soak when there is something wrong. Top 2 reasons are not high enough humidity and parasites. They soak to make up for loss of humidity and to ease the irritation of crawling parasites. If your temp is right, having a large bowl aids in adding humidity to the tank. If your ball is not soaking, it tells me that your humidity is high enough and you are parasite free. Be Happy about this! Good Luck! I hope this is what you were looking for!12. My bunny's peeing in her water bowl?go to petsmart or petco and get a water bottle13. Why does my cat keep tipping over his water bowl?Cat is a retard and will die in a fire14. My cat, a 5-month old kitten, keeps putting his paws in the water bowl and splashing it out!! What can I do?Kitty is playful and BORED! Play with her gently with feather toy or yarn. Water is a new playtoy/fascination which will pass. A larger bowl may help. Put bowl on a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet which should lay over a garbage bag or a waterproof pad under it (even a large chux pad will keep the water off the floor needing protection. A treat ball may also help.15. How do i stop my dog from spilling her water bowl, every day!?Put her in the crate and have someone come over and take her out and play with her. the pup shouldnt be alone for long periods of time. I really hope you are not leaving her outside all day in tha heat.16. My dog is scared of his water bowl - how do I help him?well first off if hes gonna overcome his fear close you bathroom door make sure he dont drink from the toilet so he will HAVE to drink from the bowl get sme treats stand by the bowl tell him to sit point at the bowl and wait until he takes a drink or just put a treat on the rim of th bowl and show him that he has to use the bowl GOOD LUCK

Those who earned the "classical" diploma fulfilled one year of performing or visual arts and two years of foreign language in addition to the minimum requirements to graduate from a LBUSD high school. Wilson is the only school to offer such a high school diploma in the district. PathwaysThe institution offers five distinct pathways: Wilson Academic Vision of Excellence, School of the Arts, School of Leadership & Public Service, School of Medicine & Biotechnology, and School of Technology. The Distinguished Scholars program is offered to students who are in a school pathway and met academic requirements in middle school. Wilson Academic Vision of Excellence Referred to as WAVE, the Wilson Academic Vision of Excellence is the most rigorous pathway offered at the school. This liberal arts intensive program provides students the resources to earn acceptances at elite universities and colleges. In order to be qualified, students must earn at least a 3.60 GPA in middle school, be enrolled in Algebra I, receive at least an SBAC score of 2,500 in English, and indicate that the program is their first choice prior to applying. During the program, students must follow a road-map to graduation, which includes at least ten Advanced Placement courses. Distinguished Scholars The oldest program at Long Beach Wilson, Distinguished Scholars provides supplemental distinction for all students outside of those in the WAVE pathway. Although not a pathway itself, the program recognizes those who had a strong academic performance at the institution. Incoming students must receive acceptance by having at least a 3.3 GPA and be enrolled in Algebra I prior to applying. Those not meeting the prerequisites may achieve this award by obtaining at least a 3.3 GPA and receiving a C or higher in Algebra I in addition to the program requirements. The program requires students to have at least a 3.3 GPA, complete four Advanced Placement classes, and possess at least sixty hours of volunteering outside of the school community. School of the Arts The School of the Arts emphasizes the study of the arts through completion of courses studying several disciplines within the field, ranging from theatre to photography. Students must choose a primary and secondary discipline to study at Long Beach Wilson, while completing the requirements for graduation. Students primarily have opportunities related to the arts, such as completing a certification program at Long Beach City College in their discipline of choice. There are no additional prerequisites for this program prior to applying. School of Leadership and Public Service Designed for the future leaders of society, this program has students embark on experiences in a wide range of public service sectors. Students have the opportunity to take coursework that focuses on ways to benefit a sector, varying from forensic science to criminal law. Exemplo Pisca LED Blink
Once you've worked out what rating LEDs your using you can get a better idea of what power source would be the best. If your just using standard LEDs (around 20mA) there's no reason you could not power the whole lot from a 9v PP3 battery, you could even use a smaller equivalent 9v battery to get the size and weight down - but the smaller you get the less it's life span will be. I use an Arduino, 3 x 595 Shift Register and one of these Bi-colour Red Green LED matrix - the whole lot is powered by a PP3 9v battery and it will last around 30 hours of solid LED scrolling fun! Here's a video showing my matrix if you are interestedWhat are the major differences that differentiates LCD with an LED display? There are at least two types of LED displays. Both have benefits over "normal" LCDs, but an LED display is automatically much better than a more traditional LCD. Some LED displays use LED along the edge of the screen, and pretty much work exactly as fluorescent LCDs. Other LED displays have the LEDs scattered over the whole display surface, behind the LCD panel. This makes it possible to have different brightness for different regions of the display. The full on (O)LED displays will allow pixels to be completely black (turned off) while the neighbour pixel can be bright "white". This will allow for a much higher dynamic range in the displayHow do I hook up LED's to a battery? You do not need a circuit board of any kind. If budget is your priority then use small gauge wire (say 0.2mm) to connect your components. Very cheap for 3 or 6 feet from your electronics store (under a dollar). Do not hook up to power point - that will blow them & expose you to an electric shock Use 1 x 9V standard battery. Connect 3 separate wires from the '' end of the battery to each LED & then connect a 330 ohm resistor to the other ends of the LED's. Then tie the ends of the resistors together & connect to the '-' end of the battery The LED's are polarity sensitive so if they do not lite up first time, turn the LED's that do not around the other wayDriving a high power (200mA) LED with a GPIO and NPN transistorThe main problem of this schematic is still not mentioned in the answers. It is the very big power on the current limiting resistor. $ P = fracU^2R = frac6*630 = 1. 2W$This will have two effects:The resistor must be rated for this power and still will be very hot.The efficiency of the schematic will be pretty low - 0.6W on the LED vs 1.2W on the resistor = 30%; As a result the battery will be discharged much more faster than possible. For such powerful LEDs I would suggest another solution, described in my answer on another similar quesstion. The schematic from this answer is directly applicable for 9V supply, but a Schottky diode have to be connected in series with the LED, because it will not withstand 9V reverse voltageIs it better 4 an LED grow light to have more LED chips at 1 watt each or half the LED chips at 2 watts each?I recently replaced over 100 400 watt HPS area (parking lot) lighting with LED lighting. They had to choose between the 90 one watt units or the 45 two watt units. We were told by the salesman that the 45 LED units were better, produced less heat and would last longer. They chose the 45 LED units. The 45 LED units are rated at 91 watts while the 90 LED units were rated at 93 watts. Same lumens and Kelvin temperature but 3 watts lessDigit LED has single input, multiple outputs for each segment. Concerns about “sinking” 5v supply into digital pinsThis is called a common-anode LED. The anodes ( side) are shared. They probably dedicate two pins (3 and 8) to share the current to the anodes.Connecting the common anode to 5V is fine. However you should have current-limiting resistors between each of the other pins (the cathodes) and the Arduino digital pin. Otherwise you are getting the Arduino to try to "sink" its own 5V supply through a digital pin, which far exceeds its rating. You will probably damage the output driver MOSFETs and they will stop working. Plus the excessive current will damage the LEDs as well. See the LED resistor calculator. Something like a 330 ohm resistor, in series with each of the cathodes, should be adequate. Now, setting the digital pins to output will "sink" 10 mA or thereabouts from 5V, through the LED (which lights up) and through the digital pin to ground. You control what "number" you see on the LED by turning off the appropriate pins, to make the segments light up. Also see The care and feeding of LEDs.which powers 3 volt LED longer....2AA alkaline batteries or one 3v lithium battery? It depends entirely on the mHA rating of the battery. This is not milliamps per hour but milliamp hours. This however is a hard unit to measure so the value on the battery(if there even is one) is going to be an approximation at best. AA batteries typically have a rating around 3000mAH. A 2032 coin cell is likely only going to be in the 200-300mAh range. Therefore the higher power(though much larger) AA cells will likely last longer. The voltage does not matter so much since a diode will only drop a certain voltage. Because of this, there always needs to be a resistor in series to avoid damaging the LED. Since it's a blinking LED though, there is *probably* already one inside it along with the blinking circuitry. Also, since it has blinking circuitry that is always powered, then no, it wo not last twice as long but it may be pretty close though. LED's use very little power and can last quite a while on a single battery. What is LED? Who invented LED?A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons. ...LED invented byNick HolonyakShuji NakamuraOleg Losev. What are the economic costs of using LED technology, compared with ...?We need to look at cost per KiloWatt hour charged for the electricity to burn each of those bulbs. LED's cost more but consume less KWh to operate. The other argument is with Incandescents we pollute our atmosphere because it takes coal burning electrical plants to provide the electricty. So I guess with a LED the electricity needed can be taken from marshmallow rainbows and blue birds floating in the sky because we do not need those nasty coal burning plants polluting our atmosphere. Getting off the subject here a bit but economically we have to look at the consumer as well as electrical costs. You may pay 100 bucks for an LED and a dollar for an incandescent. But the incandescent will consume more electricity to run (and yes I concede that point even though I believe all this “green“ crap is just that, crap to sell you some crap) The other draw back right now though is longevity. A 100 watt lightbulb (I do not know anyone that uses 100 watts though I've been buying 40 for many years now) but that one dollar 100 watt light bulb will last you a year sometimes. That 100 dollar LED might last you a month, maybe two, (Ive had three burn out in less than three weeks, stopped buying them and yes, those are normally around 7 to 9 dollars). Anyway just a simple cost benefit vs. loss replacement ratio thing. Do I want to spend a dollar for a incandescent light bulb and pay 100 dollars a year to light it or do I want to spend thirty dollars a year replacing LED's but pay 70 dollars in electric to run those?Whatu2019s the most hassle-free way I may lower a power input from 3v to 2.4v or a little under to light an array of 2.4v max 200 LEDs in a breadboard (without burning them or having to put a resistor on each LED)?If you are breadboarding electronics, you need to refer to the manufacturer's datasheets, which are typically online. If current needs to be metered, a transistor driver circuit could be designed. If the LEDs are balanced, 20 columns of 10 LEDs in series would match a standard 24. 0 v supply. Is a full spectrum 380-840nm white phosphor LED suitable for growing plants? If you look on the spectrum further down, you will see it is nothing like "full spectrum" but two peaks that probably look to the human eye like decent white light. I would want more information before trying to use them for growing plants. Note also that this is a manufacturer selling them wholesale. After all that, this week's New Scientist (Jan 18-24, 2014) has an item on pg17-18 about vertical farms. Even though the operational costs of LEDs (28% efficiency) are far better than incandescent and even fluorescent lamps, they are still one of the largest costs for the latest generation of vertical farms. So much so that vertical farms still try to use natural sunlight when they can. Hence most are still found in high population tropical cities.A Kyoto, Japan company (Nuvege) is quoted as using a windowless vertical farm with "LED lighting tuned to two types of chlorophyll, one preferring red light and the other blue". This could well match the spectrum for the LEDs you link to. As I said, I would want to find more, but yes LEDs are being used in specialized commercial settings where sunlight is not practicalWould a Honda dealership be willing to change my halogen headlights for LED headlights? Most mechanics will do part swaps for you if you supply the parts. However, you need to make sure that the LED module you want will actually fit your model year. Headlamps are a major design point, and when LEDs are chosen over halogen lamps, the designers immediately change the headlight profile because they do not have to account for the bulb fittings, reflectors, and so forth. An easier swap would be to change your halogen bulbs for LED array bulbs of the same type. These use the same reflector, headlamp connection harness, and bulb clasp points.Would a Honda dealership be willing to change my halogen headlights for LED headlights?.Would an LED or LCD HDTV be better?First, unless it is an OLED, “LED“ and LCD are the same thing. They both have LCD panels, the ones called just LCD have cold cathode fluorescent lamps for the backlight, LED obviously uses LEDs for the backlight. And there is no “E“ in Blu-ray Disc, which is the proper spelling and capitalization. What is more important is the panel type, like TN, VA, or IPS. A spec they usually do not specify. A VA or IPS panel with fluorescent backlight is better than a TN with LED backlight. that said my Vizio M260MV is an LED edge type backlit TN 1080p LCD and I love it for Blu-ray and gaming. I typed this on it as my computer monitor.

Why Is Earth's Core Iron?
I can only answer the question of why is it mostly iron. Not too sure of the magnetic properties of iron versus nickel. As said in another answer, there is simply much more iron around than nickel. But the earth has also a large amount of other metals: silicon, magnesium, calcium, aluminium. So why is the core made of iron-nickel and not the other stuff? The answer is in the oxygen. When you take a metal and oxygen, you form an oxide - usually a solid, brittle, "earthy" material. The best example is metallic iron oxygen = rust. But not all metals are the same - some metals "like" oxygen more than others. If you have one atom of magnesium and another of iron, and only one atom of oxygen around - it will first bond with magnesium. Considering the entire oxygen budget of the Earth, there was enough oxygen to bond with all of the silicon, magnesium, calcium, aluminium (and just about the rest of the periodic table) to form the solids we usually refer to as rocks. By the time you got to the less oxygen-loving elements, such as nickel and iron, you had very little oxygen left. You had enough to oxidise some of the iron and nickel, but not all of it. That's why there was a lot of iron and nickel that was left as metals.During Earth's formation, the entire thing was molten. Metallic iron and nickel are denser than the oxidised stuff ("rocks"), so it sank to the bottom, forming the metallic core. The oxidised metals ended up forming the mantle on top of it1. Finding Aluminium is so hard!In the beginning, your best source of aluminium will be aluminium cans. They are not only common, they also give you 2 units of aluminium and have a weight of 0.1; they yield 20 units of aluminium per weight. The next best items are the cake pan, the surgical tray, and the TV dinner tray, which yield 6 units per weight (3 units with a weight of 0.5) and are less common. However, better than searching the wastelands for cans, you can get lots of aluminium from scrapping metal armor and weapons, if you've got the Scrapper perk. Although they yield much less aluminium per weight than the cans or the trays, they are exceedingly more common and easier to find; half the wastelands is armed and wants you dead, after all. Why look for the aluminium, if the aluminium's looking for you? Also, do not forget to scrap any trash lying around in your neighborhood (highlighted in yellow in the workshop interface). Cars are fairly rich in aluminium and have no weight (or rather, they weigh so much, you can not carry them in the first place)2. Does aluminium foil promote or stop waves? If you totally enclose and electronic device in aluminum foil no radiated electric fields will get through it, because it is a Faraday cage3. aluminium fabricator to make rocket launchers for boat. blacktown area.?Search your area for Aluminum fabrication and welding. There are many boat builders that have Leaning Posts by width and heights4. Why is aluminium so easy to make into alloys?Because of its relatively low melting point5. What type of electromagnetic wave can pass through silver or aluminium standard mirror? The answer I provided to this older question is very applicable here. The degree to which an EM signal is obstructed will depend on the material properties of the object (conductivity, primarily) and the wavelength of the signal. For a mobile phone, the conductive metal coating of the mirror is likely much thinner than the skin depth, so the signal should only be weakened a little bit.6. How do I get grease and dirt off of aluminium pattern floor?use a product called ZEP 40. thats formula 40. its the best degreaser ive ever seen, we use it to clean stains in city buses where i work7. Will a polished aluminum bicycle frame rust?Pool handrails are more likely to be made of fairly high grade stainless steel than aluminium, so a different chemistry. And to be picky, "rust" is a word usually used for steel and iron only. So, while aluminium might not rust, it can certainly corrode, under the right circumstances. People using trainers have reported issues with their sweat doing damage to their bikes for instance.
Five Style Tips That Will Help You Stay Stylish Throughout Your Pregnancy
It Is 2021, HOW Are We Still Reading Stories About Women Being Kicked Out Of Places For Breastfeeding? How Black Actors And Actresses Are Taking Over Period Drama To Remind Us That They ACTUALLY Were There. "What do I wear as my bump gets bigger?" "I can not even see my feet!" "Nothing fits me, HELP!" These are just some of the questions you may ask yourself and your friends when you are pregnant and see your bump start to grow, which, if in your first pregnancy, tends to occur after 20 weeks or so. Not all bumps are created equal however, so the way you carry your bump may be completely different from someone else's... But your bump is your biggest asset. As a Personal Stylist and Founder of Glow In Style, a platform designed to provide online styling services for mum's who are expecting, nursing and beyond, I have come up with 5 Style Tips that will help you from the beginning till the end of your pregnancy. You have to think long term wear when looking into shopping for your bump, not just during your pregnancy but after as well. Do not buy anything that you can not wear at least three different ways by combining them with clothing you already own in your current closet. Some great suggestions to add to your wardrobe are button down tops and wrap dresses - these are fantastic to wear during your pregnancy but also have longevity to use afterwards too either when breastfeeding or to help in the transition period of your body changing post-birth. It may be something you already do but being pregnant is a great time to try accessorising with belts that sit directly under the bust line, necklaces that are long enough to wear with your bump, and bracelets that accentuate the wrist (which is the smallest part of your body); show them off by rolling up the sleeves of long sleeve tops and dresses. Rock that bump of yours without losing your personal style. Find ways to still feel like you, but in clothes that will grow with you. If you are into silks or satins, you can still wear these by sizing up or pairing with a jumper to conceal a button or zip. No need to give up your body-con dresses during your pregnancy either as this silhouette is a great way to show off your bump. Get creative with ideas when pulling outfits together and experiment with colour. This does not have to be stressful, just go with what works for you and what makes you feel most comfortable. Overall, as long as you feel comfortable in what you wear, that is the most important thing when pregnant. Wear your trainers with a maxi dress and denim jacket, or put on a pair maternity leggings if you are seeking ultimate comfort for your bump. Being pregnant is a time where you should be relaxing and enjoying the process of your body changing. It is an amazing experience watching your bump grow, but it can also become very uncomfortable as you get bigger and start carrying more weight. My biggest tip is to find things that spark most joy and provide ease when pregnant. I have been pregnant three times (currently expecting my third), so have really had time to scour, try and test ALL of the pregnancy related items on the market. In my search, I found items I really love and have used throughout each pregnancy. These are the items that I highly recommend no matter where you are in your pregnancy... These leggings are so soft and comfortable. The fleece works great for the Great British weather, and they also work fantastically pre & post pregnancy as well. I only bought 2 and they have lasted throughout all my pregnancies (that is a lot of wear!) My goodness, this support band has been a saviour to my body and I can not speak highly enough of it! I have carried very large babies and I have a petite frame - I am 5'2"/ 157 cm so carrying big babies has been very difficult. But these bands have worked wonders for me, so I purchased 2. They also work postpartum as well. I used it for the relief of lower back and round ligament pain and it very much helped me. I would recommend getting at least two of these, one in a size for your 2nd trimester and a larger size for your 3rd trimester. These dungarees are amazing! I love that you can dress them up or down, and can pair with other items regardless of what season we are in. The quality of these have lasted me throughout all of my pregnancies and will last for years to come. I even use this without a bump because they are so comfortable. Being through 3 pregnancies means I have years of experience knowing what the maternity essentials are that can be paired with absolutely any outfit. In my experience and through a lot of market research, I have found the essentials to be black maternity leggings, a nursing and maternity cami top, a nursing and maternity dress, and maternity skirt - each of which grows with your bump but retains its original quality and material to be worn post-birth too.1. fashion advice? kind of need help?1) NICE jeans that make your butt look GOOD 2) pea coat, stylish and warm for the winter 3) some hot boots, pointy toed suede ones 4) scarves! How to Do Boho Fashion Sustainably: Our 12 Favourite Clothing BrandsWhenever I think of boho, I picture some of the greatest legends in the fashion and music industries. People like Stevie Nicks and Talitha Getty and the free-spirited hippies of the 60s and 70s. If you are into the boho look, you are in luck: we found 11 ethical boho brands so you can achieve the perfect artistic and relaxed style. Boho is an effortless and breezy style, characterised by long floaty skirts or dresses, loose blouses, boots, and bold (often floral) prints. Often associated with artists, intellectuals, and writers, bohemian fashion is also seen as an edgier counterculture, going against the trends, structures, and traditions of society. The boho "look" seems to have appeared in France after the French Revolution, but it really took off in the 1960s, alongside other countercultures, as young people tried to distance themselves from the growing materialistic mainstream. Today's boho is less of a counterculture and lifestyle, as mass media embraced this romantic style. In 2019, boho inspirations include the Olsen twins, Sienna Miller, Zoe Kravitz, Alexa Chung, Florence Welch, and everyone at Coachella, really. Thanks to them, the trend has been revived with a modern twist and minimalist approach. But many of the boho brands we hear about today, like Free People or Anthropologie, can harm the planet. And that's not what we want, right? To help you out, we've rounded up 12 brands doing beautiful sustainable boho clothing. Ready to channel your inner Janis Joplin?3. Get up close with Ao Nuevos elephant seals in all of their blubbery, bewhiskered glory
Now is the time to visit the world famous NorCal breeding grounds. In the animal kingdom, the seal family wont be winning any prizes in the glamour category. Youll understand this if youve ever watched one galumphing across the sand, head bobbing vigorously as it hefts along its bulky body. It also doesnt help that they make sounds similar to a sick dog. And among its flippered brethren, nothing beats the pound for pound fugliness of the male Northern elephant seal. Theyre like grey Jabba the Huts or 5,000-pound blubber slugs with big, bulbous noses called proboscises (why they share that term with the delicate hummingbird, well never understand). Each January, hundreds of visitors flock to Ao Nuevo State Park to gawk at these funky creatures en masse for a fundraiser called Seal Adventures. The event (which supports educational and interpretive programs at the park and others along the San Mateo coastline) gives visitors unlimited access to four miles of trails and viewing areas along the dunes.Regular docent-guided tours are offered daily (December through March), but the fundraiser is ideal for those who prefer to take their own time rather than move at the pace of a group or who wish to skip the commentary to commune with nature one on one. Its a huge draw for nature photographers who heft in spindly tripods and cameras with lengthy zoom lenses. Docents direct foot traffic to keep everyone safe, donning bright red shirts that stand in sharp contrast to the beige sand. The event happens in the middle of the big haul-out, a season when the seals come ashore (males for three months, females for one). Nobody eats a thing that entire time, says Christen Bechert, the Docent Coordinator and Interpretive Specialist at the park. She explains these pinnipeds support that low metabolism by sleeping 20 hours a day. The most common question, I swear, is Are they dead? Bechert chuckles. But no, its just because their heart rate has dropped down so low to conserve that energy. They only have to breathe every 15 minutes. Sometimes youll see them taking a nap with their head fully underwater. Totally fine for them. A portion of the raised funds covers the parks ten-week docent training program, which is much-needed for safe maneuvering. You never know when a giant seal might come flopping in your direction and nobody wants their day trip turning into some 1980s sci-fi/horror called Attack of the Mutant Jell-O Molds.Bechert and her team have learned the intricate dance of steering you around slumbering seals on the dunes and keeping you out of blubber behemoth brawls. It can get kind of dynamic out there, she says. I have to be very good at detecting what the seals next move is going to be. Docents are trained to know which trails the mammals use and how to spot an active seal. (If the seals on his stomach [rather than his side] and hes looking around a lot or keeps raising his head then, to me, that seal wants to go somewhere else.)Perhaps most importantly, docents know how to locate the dominant males (known as beachmasters) and understand the reactions they might trigger. Beachmasters often chase the younger fellows away from their harem of ladies. And that seal in front is terrified. He doesnt want to get beat up, Bechert notes. So everything in front of him will become a speed bump. Including us. They just go, they dont care.Docents learn to ask, If he moved, where would these other seals run to? Its a little like a chess game and figuring out where your friend will move his pieces nextif those chess pieces made guttural grunting noises and weighed a hulking 5,000 pounds. One tip for spotting alpha males? The lady seals swoon over a man with a large proboscis. The bigger the nose, the bigger the seal and the bigger the seal, the better protection, Bechert says. Thats what the ladies are looking for in a man: someone to be their bodyguard while theyre nursing their baby. For those who gravitate to quirky animal facts, the docent-guided tours are ideal. Youll learn about how these creatures can dive a mile deep (hunting where bioluminescent squid or lantern fish hang out) and how the pups teach each other to swim (these moms dont endorse helicopter parenting). Youll also learn how seals were declared extinct three different times in the late 1800s due to overhunting. Thankfully they were wrong. Docents arent given a script to recite. Instead, they listen to rangers and UCSF researchers on the latest scientific research in the field as well as learn about how to lead tours effectively, how to interact with outdoor environments and how to work with kids. At that point, its up to them to shape their tour, ensuring a slightly different experience each time guests visit. We like to give them the freedom and let their personality shine. I dont want anyone out there just repeating something off of a piece of paper, Bechert says. When you speak from a place of passion, youre talking about what you care about and its so much easier to make other people care.No roadside lookout can compare to the immersive experience at Ao Nuevo State Park. With the engaging experts, the endless natural landscape of the rolling dunes and, of course, the mega-fauna, its easy to imagine youre on a safari only the rhinos are legless and much, much flabbier. To make some flippered friends, attend Seal Adventures on Saturday and Sunday, January 25th-26th.For regular docent-guided tours, visit Ao Nuevo State Park any day December through March. How to Disconnect Rusted Plumbing From Hot Water Tank?
Let the tank warmth up then open the pop off valve and let the air out. Leave it open until you have full waft of water coming out you are going to in finding the pop off valve on the highest of the tank, or on the aspect at top of tank It has a leaver on top, elevate the leaver straight up when completed flit it down. This can be a safeguard valve to re go away pressure will have to it end up to high-quality for tank to handle, it continues tank from exploding.1. How do you setup a salt water tank?what i can tell you is dont listen to people who dont own marine aquariums, its not illegal to own corals, its illegal to pick corals out of the ocean without some sort of permit. this is the reason why biologist and some what the government is pushing the need for tankbred, aquacultured and manicultured. back on topic starting an marine aquarium is very easy in my opinion but from people i meet have a terrible time starting it up(the main problem seems to be salinity) starting off the things you want to buy: marine salt aquarium(30 gallons or up) stand live sand live rock filter(10-30 gallons more then your aquarium(preferably canister)) heater powerhead(stronger gph if getting coral/anemone) *all glass canopy(dramatically reduces evaporation and allows more light penetration) *protein skimmer(its optional but necessary(takes out harmful wastes)) live or frozen food(dont feed flakes, to give the optimal nutrient buy frozen or live) a few 5 gallon buckets from home depot(2 bucks each) water buffer hydrometer when starting out get your tank clean without using soap just power scrub it. make sure the stand is sturdy and fill the aquarium with sand; make it some what leveled and your going to want to have 2-4 inches depth of sand. genteelly add the water i put a plate where im going to drop the water so the sand doesnt go everywhere. thing to know is you should mix the salt in the bucket before adding it to the tank, this is better then adding salt directly to the tank but you can do either or. once the water is in the tank with the sand, add the water buffer which is a powder that gets the water to 8.2 salinity and keeps it stable. once you have added your buffer, get your filter, heater, skimmer and powerhead running. within 24 hours check your parameters; check ph,ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and salinity. ph should be 8.2, ammonia at 0,nitrite at 0, nitrate at 0 and salinity at 1.22-1.23 remember you should add water conditioner to the aquarium to, this helps reduce the ammonia and other harmful chemicals. after 2 weeks with your aquarium running with sand and water and all correct parameters you can add live rock and preferably cured live rock. live rock can be really expsenive i suggest buying from online(live aquaria, i have bought about 100 pounds of premium fiji live rock from there) i believe they are having a sale on live rock now. after 2 weeks with running with live rock and all correct parameters you can add hardy inverts such as hermits, some crabs, snails and very few shrimp. after a month with running with live rock, hardy inverts and the correct parameters you can add hardy fish such as damsels, dottybacks, some gobies, chromis, and basselets. do monthly water changes or water changes every 2 weeks for 10-20% water. remember buy cheap and i was being fair with this cycling and adding fish. i usually wait 2 months before adding inverts to my tank, which is probably the only reason why i never lost a marine fish, invert or coral yet, the only thing i lost so far was a sebae anemone. acclimating is very important in marine aquairum keeping. i highly suggest doing drip method but you can use float method. acclimate for a minimum of 15 minutes.2. green tinted water in 30 gallon fresh water tank?It is algae bloom. I looked it up on the internet 'cause I've got a nasty case of it right now. It said to turn the temp on the water down to 72 degrees. Get the tank out of all natural light and if you can not , wrap the entire tank in aluminum foil to block the natural light. Keep your lights off for 2 days. Also it said that algae feeds off of phosphorous in the water and you can get phosphorous pads to put in the filter that gets rid of excess phos. in the water. Also it said to do 20 % water changes every other day and to make sure you are not overfeeding 'cause the food has alot of phos. and other nutrients in it that algae feed off of. I've used the chemical crap you can buy....it does not work!! Or at least for me.....good luck with it. I am going to try all this and give it a try also3. How do i set up a small 1 to 2 galloon salt water tank?I am sorry to say it, but the only thing that a one or two gallon aquarium is good for is a Betta or Goldfish. You will need atleast a 25 or 30 gallon aquarium if you are wanting it to be saltwater
In the Light Bulb of Death
In the Light Bulb of Death
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF CFL'S?CFL's appear pricey at first, compared to regular incandescent light bulbs. They can cost upwards of $2.98 each, compared to a six pack of incandescent bulbs at$1.50. However, CFL's last for seven years instead of 1000 or 2000 hours of the standard light bulb. Also, CFL's, with a comparable illumination of 60 watts, use only 14 watts, while a 60 watt incandescent uses--well, 60 watts.COLORS CFL's now come in a variety of colors--soft white, bright white and daylight. These colors range from a warm spectrum (yellow light) to a cool spectrum (blue light). One can match the colors to their lighting needs. For example, warm light for the living room and dining, cooler light for reading lamps and hallways and the coolest light for closets, basement and work shop.SHAPES AND STYLES They also come in a variety of shapes these days. CFL reflectors for recessed lighting and floodlights and spotlights for exterior use, CFL's that mimic the shape of a standard "A" type light bulb--(the little spiral is hidden inside) and CFL's that mimic globe-shaped incandescents often used for vanity bars--those Hollywood-type fixtures contractors are so fond of putting in bathrooms (again the little spiral is hidden inside). There are three-way CFL's available as well, and because they are quite large, they come with an adapter that will spread the harp of a lamp to accommodate their size.In addition, many security light fixture manufacturers are designing new style that use 300 watt fluorescents instead of the standard metal halide and mercury vapor lamps, which in the near future, will be phased out of production.WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF CFL'S?Just a few CFL type bulb styles can be dimmed. This is a handicap for many lighting applications, including bathrooms and dining, where a lower light might be desired for "mood" lighting or serving as a night light. Also, CFL's do not work well in touch lamps, dawn to dusk or motion sensor-regulated exterior fixtures. Fluorescent ballasts (the little "jump start mechanism that all fluorescents must have to turn on) don't hold up well in lighting applications where the light is turned on and off frequently. The long life of a CFL's is shortened considerably when used in this type of fixture.Typically, fluorescents are considerably more sensitive to temperature changes than incandescent bulbs are. Some tubes for strip lights for work shops, etc. are heavy duty service that can adapt better to high/low temperature changes. New CFL floodlights and spotlights with heavier glass housing can be used for exterior service, however, their lives can be shortened by constantly rising and falling temperature changes.Probably the biggest concern about CFL's these days is their mercury content and disposability. Although the amount of mercury in a CFL is relatively small, as much as could fit on the head of a pin, down the road, when large quantities of CFL's will be disposed as their bulb lives comes to an end, regulations for their safe disposal must be in place.Lastly, cautions concerning breaking a compact fluorescent bulb or tube and inhaling air borne mercury will cleaning up the shattered glass, make CFL's problematic where incandescents are not.The reduction in electric bills alone have won over many consumers who are aware of the hazards of CFL's and fluorescents in general. As consumers are becoming more conservative with their spending because of increasing costs of food and gas, a lower utility bill looks better all the time. Updating information on packaging of CFL and fluorescent tubes concerning handling and disposal would be helpful. Until this happens, handling fluorescents carefully, keeping updated on methods and regulations for disposal and being aware of new dimmable or sensor-operative CFL's can counter the disadvantages for the consumer. My overview regarding CFL's is that their impact on energy-generation reduction at present compensates for their disadvantages, which will, in the near future, be addressed and, hopefully, resolved.Similar articles on lighting and other topics can be found at my blog
